5 Iconic Australian Road Trips

In a country as beautiful and diverse as Australia, it's crazy to always take the quickest route to your destination. To really appreciate Australia, you should take the road less travelled and see the stunning vistas this country has to offer.

There are countless road trips to consider, but to get started here's 5 iconic road trips you could take this summer:

Great Ocean Rd, Vic

1. The Great Ocean Road, Victoria

We know it's included as a must-do on every road trip list, but that's because it's one of the most famous coastal drives in Australia. Stretching 243 km from Torquay to Allansford, you'll wind your way along one of the most scenic coastal roads in the world.

Take in shipwrecks, rainforests, green countryside, stunning coastal scenery and the 12 Apostles. You can complete the drive in one day, but we recommend taking at least 3 days to enjoy the cute seaside towns and make the most of your trip.

If you've got time stop your trip at the Apostles, continue on to explore Port Campbell National Park, Loch Ard Gorge, the Island Archway and the cliff-face Gibson Steps, it's worth it!

Tip: If you're only going one way start at Torquay, so you're on the oceanside of the road.

Grand Pacific Drive, NSW

2. The Grand Pacific Drive, New South Wales

The Grand Pacific Drive is an easy 140km coastal drive that takes you from Sydney over the Sea Cliff Bridge and through iconic coastal towns like Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama and Shoalhaven.

Enjoy vistas of cliff faces, stunning beaches, rainforest and rolling green countryside.

Tip: Stop at Kiama blowhole and pack your swimmers.

 3. Perth to Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia

One for the bucket list, this 1,200 kilometre west coast drive takes you from Perth to Exmouth, along the beautiful Coral Coast via Cervantes, Geraldton, Monkey Mia and Carnarvon.

Not only will you witness where the rugged outback meets the crystal blue Indian Ocean, you'll get to swim with dolphins, manta rays and whale sharks and view the dramatic Pinnacles Desert and the stunning gorges of the Kalbarri National Park.

We recommend planning your trip well in advance and allowing at least 12 days to appreciate all this road trip has to offer.

Tip: North of Carnarvon supplies become expensive and limited, so stock up on food beforehand and don't forget your snorkelling gear!

Scenic Rim, QLD

4. Scenic Rim, Queensland

The Scenic Rim is ancient volcanic land, sometimes called the Green Cauldron. It boasts the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Lamington National Park, plus six other national parks.

This four day trip heads inland from the Gold Coast through Beaudesert, Boonah, Mt Alford, Mt Barney, Rathdowney, the Lost World Valley and finally wraps up at Tamborine Mountain.

You'll enjoy forests, pastures, wild rivers and rock pools, scenic vistas and historical sites. The area also abounds in quaint villages and rural retreats.

Tip: If driving on the weekend, fuel up in the morning because some places may not stay open all day Saturday or Sunday.

Port Arthur TAS

5. Hobart to Port Arthur, Tasmania

This is a beautiful 110 km road trip that allows you to experience the best Tasmania has to offer. Head from Hobart straight to Richmond to see some of Tasmania’s richest heritage, including Australia’s oldest bridge and still-standing Catholic Church. Take time out to sample the grapes, cheese and olives from local vineyards and food producers.

Head through the small fishing village of Dunalley and then wind down through Eaglehawk Neck to appreciate the dramatic views across Pirate’s Bay.

Arriving in Port Arthur, take the time to view the impressive rock formations of Devil’s Kitchen, the Blowhole and Remarkable Cave, Tasman Arch, Waterfall Bay, Cape Hauy and Crescent Bay. Finally end the perfect day exploring the UNESCO World Heritage-listed convict site, Port Arthur.

Tip: For the freshest oysters drive through Dunalley and head over the swinging bridge to the Murdunna.
